| Back to reviews | | Hey Y'All,
Been a while. work has been keeping me very busy. I am still hitting a few shows here and there. Speaking of hitting a few shows, I left work and headed north on I-23 towards Ann Arbor. The Ragbirds were having theur cd release party at the Ark, one of my favorite venues! I had just enough time to hit the Whole Foods for a salad, then Sushi Town, for some Sushi and Miso Soup to go. The Tuna was exquisite! I lucked out and got a spot on Main Street about 50 yards from the Ark. That would be very important for later. At 7:00 pm there was only 1 person in line for 7:30 doors, so it was down to the Ann Arbor Chocolate shop for a quick dessert. Very tasty Mocha Chip Ice Cream among the 24 flavors offered. When you open the door, the smell of chocolate just about kills ya!
Back to the Ark where I was 7th in line. This meant I would be able to pull my spot in the first 4 rows of GA in front of the stage. Sure enough, I took my favorite spot in the 3rd row, dead center! I had enough time after setting up to run backstage and say hey to Erin, randall, and Tim. I gave them a cd of their sold out November show here, and told them to kick ass tonight.
They came on just after 8:00 p.m. The place was about halfway filled. The first set consisted of their "older" tunes. I really enjoyed the Tipi Baya>Fiddle Tunes after the jam opener. The Believe it was nicely done as well. The set ended with Erin playing the Grand Piano for a solo. She said that I normally do not get the chance as it is hard to take my piano to shows. Very good line! A relatively short, 46 minute set. This was my first show seeing their new guitarist Matthew Melody. He also sang some backup vocals and lead on one song.
After a 20 minute break, they came on and played the entire new cd minus 1 song. They opened with one of my favorites Tarantella. Erin introduced her brother TJ, as he sat in on Good, playing trumpet. He would join in on vocals 2 songs later as well. I have enjoyed some of the new songs over the past year such as The Ypsilanti Song, and Harvest. Erin also showed us her talent for writing a Tango with Brand New Beat. The second set closed with a guest that played a very unique African string instrument. Not sure of the name, but very cool looking and sounding. To close out the show for an encore in it's usual spot was Moribayassa, a very hard driving African percussion tune that the entire band comes to the front of the stage and plays a percussion instrument. As everyone left the stage, Erin decided to stay and play her violin for a sweet Amazing Grace solo.
It was nice to see this refreshing group of musicians as always. They are a regional band, but if you get the chance to see them, don't hesitate. And they are very cool about taping and spreading the music! Erin or Randall, any help with the setlist would be appreciated. Here is how it went down:

I rushed to break down my gear, as I had an agenda to complete. I hurried down the street to the "getawat" car and headed about a mile away to the Blind Pig to see Simplicity and Bump. I have not been able to catch Simplicity in about a year and was very anxious to see the boys. They new I was coming as I texted Brian. I even called Jamey in New York to be sure they were in town. After parking and running to the door, I got the usual bs hassel from the security. I wanted to set up as they were on stage and settle with him afterwards. He would have no part of letting me in without paying first. With hardly anyone there, what is the difference. He then would not let me in until I showed him my ID. I used a few expetives and told him how old I was and I wasn't drinking. He said I don't give a !*@&^$#%$. I hit the middle of the floor and set up swiftly. I was rolling at 10:28, 11 minutes after the last note at the Ark! It seemed like 30 minutes.
I saw Buddy as he was performing the lights for the evening. Good seeing him as we crossed paths at Yonder last week. I look to my right, and there is B Moore! After a couple of songs I hear Pete behind the drum kit with a "Z-Man's in the house followed by Brian! Nice to feel welcome after the nasty treatment at the door! I missed the first 2 songs but got the familiar opening licks to Driving to Absolution, one of my favorites, followed by Getaway Car! That hit home. I saw Brian switch to the acoustic guitar and they started to play Somebody's Dream. Brian also had a slide steel he used for the song, very nice touch. Very solid job by Frank on bass, and brother Francis on the keyboard and vocals! I like the title track of the new one Ego Straight. Brian introduced the last one as Niagara Falls, and they broke into Drop Dead Dame. It was too short, as I was ready for more! Frank and I were reminiscing about the party at Jamey's house in Connecticut over 3 years ago. The cops shut the music down late that night. I barely remember driving Frnak and I to Laguardia as we left Jamey's at 5:00 a.m. Frank remembered it well. When I began seeing these guys, B Moore was a freshman in college at Vermont. I asked him how school was and found out he graduated already! Time sure does fly. So glad I got to see the boys! I will not wait that long for my next show!
After deciding to stay and chew the fat even though I had an hour drive and a long work day tomorrow, I recorded Bump. I have only seen them once before a while back. They have improved since then. After a couple of songs, Matt "Tuna", the Macpodz manager, came over and introduced himself. He said Ross his trumpet player was going to sit in. I told Tuna I saw him sit in with Moe 3 weeks ago at Summer Camp in Illinois. He joined Bump near the end of the set for Bad Ass and Move on Out. Tuna invited me to any of their future shows. they had 2 this coming weekend within 1/2 hour of me, hmmmmmm. Bump got an hour and 11 minutes of air time. They had a few nice segues during the set. I did enjoy the Mystical Zen>Level>Mystical Zen sandwich. The S-$ and Return to S4 were also good. I met and hung with Joseph, the bands booking manager for part of the show.
On the way out of town, I was happy to see that the New York Pizza Depot was still going. The dude behind the counter saw me and grabbed a slice of stuffed Egg Plant Pizza and threw it in the oven. While standing there, one of the employees brought out a white Pizza. The amount of Ricoota, and the quantity of fresh garlic meted me and they plated me up one that I devoured right there as I waited for my other slice to go. Yummy. Out the door and on my way to I-94 East. Here is how it went down:

TODAY'S FEATURED HUMOR (THIS ABOUT KILLED ME!):
HOW TO SHOWER LIKE A WOMAN:
Take off clothing and place it in sectioned laundry hamper
according to lights and darks.
Walk to bathroom wearing long dressing gown. If you see husband
along the way, cover up any exposed areas.
Look at your womanly physique in the mirror - make
mental note to do more sit-ups/leg-lifts, etc.
Get in the shower. Use face cloth, arm cloth, leg cloth, long
loofah, wide loofah and pumice stone.
Wash your hair once with cucumber and sage shampoo with 43 added
vitamins.
Wash your hair again to make sure it's clean.
Condition your hair with grapefruit mint conditioner enhanced.
Wash your face with crushed apricot facial scrub for 10
minutes until red.
Wash entire rest of body with ginger nut and jaffa cake
body wash. Rinse conditioner off hair.
Shave armpits and legs.
Turn off shower.
Squeegee off all wet surfaces in shower.
Spray mold spots with Tilex.
Get out of shower.
Dry with towel the size of a small country. Wrap hair
in super absorbent towel.
Return to bedroom wearing long dressing gown and towel on head.
If you see husband along the way, cover up any exposed areas.
HOW TO SHOWER LIKE A MAN:
Take off clothes while sitting on the edge of the bed
and leave them in a pile.
Walk naked to the bathroom.
If you see wife along the way, shake wiener at her
making the woo-woo sound.
Look at your manly physique in the mirror. Admire the size of
your wiener and scratch your ass.
Get in the shower.
Wash your face.
Wash your armpits.
Blow your nose in your hands and let the water rinse
them off.
Fart and laugh at how loud it sounds in the shower.
Spend majority of time washing privates and surrounding area.
Wash your butt, leaving those coarse butt hairs stuck on
the soap.
Wash your hair. Make a Shampoo Mohawk.
Pee.
Rinse off and get out of shower.
Partially dry off.
Fail to notice water on floor because curtain was
hanging out of tub the whole time.
Admire wiener size in mirror again.
Leave shower curtain open, wet mat on floor, light and fan on.
Return to bedroom with towel around waist. If you pass
wife, pull off towel, shake wiener at her and make the woo-woo
sound again.
Throw wet towel on bed.
If there is anyone among you who did not laugh at the truth
behind this, there is something SO very wrong with you. Have a
great day! Oh, and.....woo woo!!!
